Publisher's Synopsis
The Theatrum Sabaudiae depicts the territories of the Duchy of Savoy in detailed copperplate engravings and panegyric descriptions. The copperplate engraving was an important instrument for courtly representation and the self-portrayal of the Dukes of Savoy. After the first edition in 1682, the Theatrum Sabaudiae was published in a further six editions in different languages. The new editions were aimed at both aristocratic audiences and book collectors and scholars. For the first time, this book systematically examines the genesis of the various editions of the Theatrum Sabaudiae and the Europe-wide impact of this work, which was fundamental to court culture around 1700.
