Publisher's Synopsis

This text seeks to determine the principal influences which shaped the economy of Siam between 1890 and 1920 - the age of high imperialism, when, unlike most other African and Asian states, it did not experience Western rule. In contrast to recent Thai scholarship which has emphasized the kingdom's internal political, economic and social structures, it finds them chiefly to have lain in its external relationships.
