Sir Walter Scott that his Novels had been the means of forming a new school of writing in Russia, as well as in Eng land, a?'orded that gentleman unfeign ed satisfaction; and he accepted the above Dedication in a manner which did honour to M. Zakosken and the fair Translators, as well as to himselfz - he accepted it with that honest pride which every man ought to feel, when he learns that his Works are as much appreciated by the inhabitants of foreign countries, as by those of his native land. But, alas! The thread of existence of this or nam ent of. British Literature was spun out, ere the labours necessary to present M. Zakoskrn's work to the Public, in its present shape, could well be brought to an end -we have therefore, embo died the dedication in question, in this Preface, instead of inserting it ac cording to its original destination.
