The war between the States of the Union was by far the greatest and most disastrous that has ever oc curred on the American Continent. Its effects are as apparent in the year 1898, more than thirty-two years after its conclusion, as they were the year it ended. It broke up the ties of centuries, and swept away a civilization almost as completely as it could have been done by the traditional earthquake which, many thous ands of years since, is said to have submerged the island of Atlantis.
