That fuch reports {hould be confidently fpread, even among the contemporaries of the author to whom they relate, and obtain in a few years fuch credit as to require a regular confutation; that it lhould be imagined that the greatef't phyfician of the age arrived at fo high a degree of 1kill, without any alfif'tance from his predecef fors and that a man, eminent for integrity, praetifed medicine by chance, and grew wife only by murder, is not to be confidered without allonilhment. But if it be on the Other part remembered, how much this Opinion favours the lazinefs of fome, and the pride of others; how readily fome men confide in natural fagad city, and how willingly mofl would fpare themfelves the labour of accurate reading and tedious inquiry, it will be eafily difcovered how much the interei't of multitudes was engaged in the production and continuance of this Opinion, and how cheaply thofe of whom it was known that they praetifed phyfic before they fludied it, might fatisfy themfelves and Others with the example of the illui'trious sydenham.
