Bookseller Notes

Scarce. The volume, 'compiled primarily for the benefit of the members', begins with an account by its founder James Cantlie, the pioneering physician whose energies in wartime were directed towards the provision of first aid and ambulance services to the wounded - V.A.D. London 1 was the first to be formed (in 1908), with the first women's detachment, under the supervision of Cantlie's wife Mabel, following shortly after. Chapters, largely written by V.A.D. officers, include descriptions of 'Meeting the Wounded', 'Entertaining the Wounded' (on the basis that 'to cheer is to cure', with music and food providing the best medicine), 'Air Raid Duties', and 'Attendance on the King' in 1915; a thorough account of the activities of Charing Cross Hospital (where Cantlie had been based for much of his career) includes a mention of the Venereal Department - 'of great social value' but 'not work likely to be undertaken for amusement'.
