Publisher's Synopsis
An attempt to preserve traditional fairytales that were once an oral legacy of every child in India, this book counts among the very few recent attempts to recover this fast disappearing heritage. It contains translations of six classic Bengali tales for children, selected from Dakshinaranjan Mitra Majumdar's Thakurmar Jhuli, some of which have appeared in very corrupt forms in comic books. The present translation captures the spirit of the original without losing any of its readability. The stories are charming, with an old-world flavour which is very difficult to describe.
