The Wild turkey, a bird intrinsically adapted both to uplands and Open country and forest, formerly was abundant over most of the United States from the Rocky Mountains eastward to southern New England (pl. 1, g) and furnished valuable food for the early explorers and settlers. Although tne legally killed bird is still a food resource for residents of certain areas remote from human centers, its greatest economic value today lies in the fact that as a hunting resource it provides the incentive for one of our most thrilling of outdoor sports.
