Gary Gray, a young solider from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. enlists in the Army after his 18th birthday. Six months later, after Basic Training and Advance Individual Training, he receives orders to join the war in Vietnam. During his three-year tour of duty, he discovers much about himself. He learns the Vietnamese language and falls in love with a beautiful Vietnamese maiden. Their love takes them on a journey through military racism, personal hardships and danger. Private Gray learns the Vietnamese language and adopts the Vietnamese way of life. His quick thinking and resolve prevents his capture by the Viet Cong during three different occasions. The story is much the same story of many other war brides throughout past wars. The couple must prove their love to the maiden's family and military officials by overcoming many difficulties and hardships. This story is about their struggles.
