Publisher's Synopsis

This book is the result of a collaboration between a philosopher interested in ethics and a psychiatrist. The aims of the book are to attempt to show what is valuable about psychotherapy and to identify psychotherapy's contribution to the human sciences.;The second half of the book focuses on the moral and clinical dilemmas that arise in the different forms of psychoterapy - analytic, behavioural and sytematic - and possible solutions to them. It discusses the need for a code of practice for psychotherapists, argues for an expansion of statefunded psychotherapy if the less well-off are to benefit and supports the case for an independent profession of psychotherapy.
