The Vale of Unika continues the quest of Loki for the goddess Zair and power to control the strange and mysterious creatures who once performed in Bump's Circus. After only thirty years of rejuvenation for the spirits of Nature who were displaced for more than a thousand years, Mrs. Bump knows she must allow the process to go forward. The Trickster Loki seizes upon William Wimmur as his human escort. Other powers contend through William. Mrs. Bump pleads, "Save the Vale and protect Zair!" William shows odd resilience and purposes of his own, including a deep love for the fantastic beings and especially for Zair. Thus begins the longer struggle of The Six Inversions of Purpose. How does one defeat the Lord of Fate?
