Publisher's Synopsis
The distinguished poet, Herbert Lomas, was born and grew up in Todmorden, a small town on the Yorkshire / Lancashire border. This sequence of 80 short poems in the form of a continuous narrative, is a personal history of the lost Todmorden of the 1920s and 30s, when Herbert Lomas was a boy. In his words: "It's not political history, but it records the private pains of public history… I'm struck with how creative the people were: how they invented themselves and made language, music, companionship and love out of an often bleak inheritance."
