Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The University of Basle, General Information for Foreign Students
The Basle Theological Faculty was one of the first on the continent to train Protestant ministers and to send them abroad. In the early days of reformation there were intimate relations between the University of Basle and the British Evangelical divines, and the manuscripts in our archives testify to the lively correspondence carried on between the Basie teachers and their British disciples. Ever since those days the Theological Faculty has been looked upon as a mother by many outposts of the Evangelical Reformed Church in the far East and West, and has been conspicuous for teachers of unusual merit even in periods when the University as a whole had been put in the shade by younger rivals.
The success of the Chemical Industry at Basle, which was closely allied to the scientific research work of the University Scholars, gave a new start to the Chemical Section of the Faculty of Science.
To the manufacture of silk ribbons, started by French refugees, was added the manufacture of aniline dyes. The making of dyes led to the making of all sorts of chemicals, drugs, and pharmaceutical products, and in recent years the efficiency of the Basie Chemical works has attracted the attention of the old and the new world.
