Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Training of the Apostles, Vol. 2
The chief occupation of our Lord at this time, beyond His usual and unremitted exertions in preaching to the people, was undoubtedly the training and the formation of the Twelve Apostles. At the beginning of this volume we find Him selecting them, finally and formally, from the general company of His disciples. This great act of our Lord was followed by the delivery of the Sermon on the Plain, which fills a considerable part of the present volume, although it has not been necessary to treat it at the same length with the Sermon on the Mount, on which it is in the, main founded. It may either be considered in itself, as a monument of the moral teaching which our Lord put forward at this period of His Public Ministry, or it may be regarded as a model which the Apostles might follow, in the adaptation, to different audiences, of truths which had already been taught, but which were too important not to be repeated again and again.
