Captain Lewis again took charge of the land party, Clark being too weak as yet to indulge in any feats of pedestrianism. Lewis had a wet and muddy time of it ?oundering through the bayous formed by the beaver dams, in water up to the waist, and he was finally forced to the high ground bordering the river. When he tried to regain the party at camping-time he was unable to find them and had to bivouac for the night without them. The night was cool and his covering was the canopy of the sky, but a good fire of driftwood kept him warm, and a duck appeased his hunger. The next morning the voyage'urs overtook him and after breakfast they discovered a seven-mouthed river, which they named Philosophy, after an attribute of that illustrious personage Thomas Jefierson. Philosophy River has since become plain Willow Creek.
