"The Trading Business" is a set of resource materials for use with the 13-17 age group and is designed to develop economic awareness.;It has been commissioned by the British Overseas Trade Board and published with 1992 and the Single Market in mind.;It uses five real UK firms of differing sizes and variety of product to provide data which enable students to gain a better understanding of the business world and how firms operate in the International Trading Market. The case studies are suitable for a wide range of courses including Economics, Business Studies, Geography and CPVE.;The material provided consists of Case Study Data and a Data Base Section with a set of A4 copymasters for duplication and photocopying within the purchasing institution.;Features of the Case Study Data are as follows: students study several firms together with their products - from a privately owned sportswear business exporting chiefly to Europe to a multinational company with worldwide interests. The material used is presented in a variety of forms including: statements from managers and employees; photographs; newspaper extracts; advertising material.;Features of the Data Base Section include: figures and other backgound information on UK trade and some of the countries to which these companies export; opportunities for students to investigate the data on their own or with others. Through role play and simulation they are encouraged to investigate trade and economic growth on the basis of first hand data, examine opportunities and constraints facing individuals and organizations and examine ways in which firms have responded to opportunities and constraints presented to them.
