Cambridge, 1888. Miss Vanessa Duncan, up from the country, finds the world of academia fascinating, but the peaceful atmosphere is shattered by the murder of a Fellow of Mathematics, Mr Akers. Vanessa's neighbour, Mr Arthur Weatherburn, had dined with Akers the night before his death, and she learns that Akers may have been trying to find a solution to the 'n-body problem', first posed by Isaac Newton, for which a prestigious prize was offered. When another mathematician is killed, Arthur is thrown into jail, but Vanessa sets about proving his innocence. Then a third mathematician dies...
