The most important work accomplished during the year was the completion of the new Basement Room beneath the main entrance. Here have been installed the Pompeian views and the Baird model of the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. The lighting of this capa cions apartment has been augmented by the introduction of a system of Welsbach burners and these popular exhibits may now be seen under greatly improved conditions.
