These 60 papers and 16 discussions convey the material presented at a conference on the public health problem posed by asbestos in place. Observations and risks are presented, including evidence from mesothelioma as a "signal" or "sentinel" event pointing to additional groups with asbestos exposure; how not to remove asbestos and how to remove it safely; when the general public is unlikely to be at risk and when it might be; priorities for asbestos abatement; and surveillance of building trades workers.
