Publisher's Synopsis

This exploration of a select number of Heinrich Bullinger's writings is one of few major studies in English on this influential reformer. It demonstrates how Bullinger's theology informs his history-writing, and how he sees the latter in an humanistic context. The main thesis is that his history-writing is an expression of the reformer's emphasis on justification by faith alone. It also constitutes the exploration of a new field in Reformation studies; the theology of history and the historical writings of the reformers. This study will interest not only Reformation scholars but also historians in general.
