The period examined begins about the end of the first quarter of the eighteenth century. The rising in?uence of Gottsched marks the gradual abandonment of the H capt und Staatsaktionen and the substitution of the dignified regular drama. Having no adequate German foundation to build upon, Gottsched borrowed ideas and models from the contemporary French drama, which meant at that time to a large extent Corneille. The stiff formality of the French regular drama was the Opposite extreme from the boisterous stage of previous years in Germany. Before this time it was impos sible to speak of regular drama in Germany. But now began a period of production, at first entirely under French in?uence.
