Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Teachings of the Crisis, Vol. 1: Address Delivered in St. Paul's Church, Camden; N. J., On the Occasion of the Funeral of Abraham Lincoln, April 10, 1865
How eagerly, how achingly, doubtingly, almost despair mgly, all eyes were turned toward the President. Would he be equal to the emergency? Had he the nerve? The wisdom? Was he, untried and inexperienced, the man to guide the nation in this hour of peril? It was a time to test the very uttermost of all that is in a character, and Mr. Lincoln met it in a spirit equal to the time. I know not anywhere in all the records of great governors and statesmen, a higher, nobler sentiment, than the concluding sentence of his first message to the special Congress of 1861, and after events have shown, that this was the spoken impress of his real nature Having thus chosen our course, without guile, and with pure purpose, let us renew our trust in God and go forward, without fear.
