Box into the ash box and up through the grate to the fuel bed. Several sampling devices were inserted radially into the furnace as shown in Plate I. These samplers were water cooled and were connected with rubber hose to a water supply and drain pipe, the latter serving also as a support for the stack. To the right is shown a table on which are gas-collecting devices.
