The Suicide Note is a dark drama with comic interludes dispersed throughout. The novel witnesses a young boy, Benjamin Mathews, endure the abuse of an alcoholic working-class stepfather, with an unusual circumstance of privilege, navigate through adolescence and early adulthood. Benjamin finds great highs with financial success and enjoys the attributes of his accumulating wealth. He eventually is brought down by his use of drugs and alcohol until he cleans up his act and starts all over again at middle-age. He is back in the high life when he meets Angelica, a younger woman from a very wealthy family. He becomes blinded by love, and we watch things unfold from there.
