IV. In act 4 the dramatis personae, often unaware, them selves, that the decision of fate has been reached, take heart of courage to renew the struggle. The ou-looker, although he has understood the trend of events more clearly than those who take part in them, must still be almost persuaded when he sees the reviving courage and strength of the protagonists that they have yet a fighting chance. Upon this act depends, in great part, the high character of the tragedy in the end. The braver the effort, the more unsubdued the spirit, the bet ter the muster against fate, the more pitiful the downfall which reveals the overwhelming odds, the predetermined event, the irremediable ruin.
