Publisher's Synopsis
This is a masterly and at the same time compact history of how the English language came to be, and the process of linguistic evolution by which it has become what it is today. The first twelve chapters treat of the three periods of "Old English," "Middle English," and "Modern English." This forms Part I.
Part II deals with Grammatical Forms.
Part III gives specimens, of Old and Middle English, such as Caedmon's "Hymn," "The Onnulum," and "The Owl and Nightingale."
It is a painstaking work on a most interesting bit of linguistic study.
