The annual message from the Executive Directory of UNICEF has become the most widely read and written about of all UN reports on world development. Bringing together the worldwide experience of its own staff and the contributions of leading international specialists in child health and nutrition, the report argues that rates of child deaths and disability in the developing world could now be reduced by half using a combination of low-cost and already available methods. The 1986 report focuses on immunization, which could prevent the deaths of 5 million young children every year. The report cites recent successes in Asia and Latin America to show that there is now a realistic hope that the vast majority of the world's children might be immunized within the next five years.
