Publisher's Synopsis

The Sint Janskerk in Gouda contains the most significant examples of sixteenth-century Dutch stained glass in the Netherlands. Here, in this comprehensive three-volume work, prominent medieval art scholars analyze each of the stained glass installations in chronological order, using detailed conservation charts and vibrant color photographs of this marvelous site.

The first volume is devoted to the oldest installation of windows, which depict Christ and his apostles and which originated from the church of the Regulars in Gouda between 1530 and 1560; the second volume examines the fourteen windows crafted by the Gouda glass painters Dirck and Wouter Crabeth between 1555 and 1571; and the final volume discusses the Pre-Reformation windows by Haarlem, Utrecht, and Antwerp glass painters and those installed between 1593 and 1604. Published as part of Corpus Vitrearum, an international scholarly series on medieval stained glass, The Stained Glass Windows in the Sint Janskerk of Gouda is an incomparable reference on a neglected aspect of Renaissance art.
