In this point of view, the subject rises to an elevation sufficient to engage upon its study the best powers of the mind. It is for this reason I go back to the early settlement of the province, in order to determine the mind and sympathies which predominated in 1743. It is there we must seek the elements of the future, - the seeds which afterwards ?ourished to maturity, - the foundations of the structure which we at present see.
