Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Silver Question in Its Social Aspect: An Enquiry Into the Existing Depression of Trade, and the Present Position of the Bi-Metallic Controbersy
In 187 2 Germany demonetized silver,1 and adopted the gold standard, and soon later legislation hostile to silver was passed in the United States of America, the States of the Latin Union, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and other countries. What we contend is, that there is a connection between this legislation and the present depression of trade. But this contention has to be proved and, in order to do so, we shall have to devote a great part of our work to an exposition of the evil and injurious effects of the demonetization of silver.
