The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on the 1.4 million elderly or disabled residents in the nation's more than 15,000 Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes. Over 175,000 long-term care residents and workers, including 130,000 living and working in federally certified nursing homes, have died of COVID-19. They were at the center of a collision of mismanagement.
