The Special Court for Sierra Leone is an independent judicial body set up to "try those who bear greatest responsibility" for serious violations, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, committed during the Sierra Leone civil war which began in 1991 and was declared officially over on January 18, 2002. On January 16, 2002, the UN and the government of Sierra Leone signed an agreement establishing the Court, which is located in Freetown. People have been indicted and charged by the Special Court with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other serious violations of international humanitarian law. The trials are divided into three groups: Revolutionary United Front, Civil Defense Forces, and Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, with only one trial, the trial of Charles Taylor, moved to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. "Volume B-4.1.2. - Case No. 04-14" is the second of three consecutive volumes and examines the case of Fofana and Kondewa, presenting the first portion of the chamber decisions.
