Publisher's Synopsis
Following Jane Seymour's death, Henry VIII is looking for a new wife. Cromwell has suggested the Princess of Cleves, a marriage which will give Henry an alliance with the Protestant Princes of Europe. Meanwhile, the body of a young girl is washed up near Nicholas Peverell's Sussex estate, and in his capacity as justice of the peace Nicholas concludes that Sarah Bowman was murdered. A skilled needlewoman, Sarah worked at the nearby Monksmere priory until the dissolution, but despite a hefty reward no one wants to talk about the former occupants of the priory - the mysterious order of clerics known as the Black Canons.
