IN the prosecution of my labors on the his tory of botany I was necessarily led to read the works of Albertus Magnus. His relation to Thomas Aquinas, and his dependence upon Aristotle and Arabic writers, prompted me to inquire what position these thinkers occupy with respect to one another, and to earlier sources. Carried further and further by my examination, I finally obtained an insight into a relation which even our more extensive histories pass by in utter silence, but which is, nevertheless, of extraordinary importance for the development of the human race. A brief survey of the result of my investigations is contained in the following pages.
