Clive & Lisa Bainbridge are in trouble, and there doesn't seem to be any easy way out!
The confident couple retired in their mid-50's with plans for a modest but comfortable retirement. Now the company Clive worked with his entire career has declared bankruptcy, one of the multitude of victims of the covid economic downturn. With the dissolution of the firm, Clive's generous pension has vanished too.
Lisa, a career nurse who always followed Clive's transfers, has little to contribute to the couple's "solution". The "extra money" they'd put into stocks has suffered s similar downturn, produced nothing, and is now worth half of what they invested.
Social Security, still several years away, would help but even that would not allow them to live their retired years as they had hoped, and it does nothing for them now. Clive recently watched a movie where three older men struggling to get by on Social Security decided to solve their financial troubles by robbing a bank. Being "averse to a lengthy prison sentence", however, Clive told Lisa that was not an option for them.
The sale of Lisa's 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 550 Coupe has given them some breathing room but their next step remains a mystery yet to be solved.
