Publisher's Synopsis
Richard, Third Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1823-89) was the last of the Grenville dukes of Stowe. While rebuilding the family fortune after the bankruptcy of his father, Buckingham played a full part in the affairs of Buckinghamshire at a time of significant political, social and economic change. This volume contains the texts of 378 letters to and from the Duke between 1861, when he succeeded to the dukedom, and his death in 1889. It is divided into six sections, each with an introduction, covering the management of the Stowe and Wotton estates, the Duke's role as lord lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, the management of the magistracy, his involvement in local politics, his philanthropic endeavours, and the promotion of railways such as the Brill Tramway.
