And here, he cannot but obferve with Pleafure, the great Improvements (the Effed' of generous Encouragement) that his Countrymen have made in the feveral Branches of Art. Their Produétions, particularly in Painting and Engraving, fo generally approved at the annual public Exhibitions, fufiiciently refute invidious Re?eétions fometimes thrown on them, that their chief Efforts center in Schemes of railing a Fortune: and alfo the unfavourable Opinion, entertained by fome Foreigners of the Abilities of the Engltjb Artills. If we confider the Difadvantage they labour under, of not having hitherto had any Public Academy; and of being, for the molt Part, obliged to complete their Studies abroad; it is rather to be wondered that they have made fo great a Progrefs; and is a convincing Proof of the natural Strength of Eng/fjb Genius, not lefs capable of di?inguilhing itfclf in the liberal Arts, than in the molt ablirufe Sciences.
