Diredra's journey continues as she finds her way out of China with a caravan headed for Damascus, her next stop. She finds employment with an honest trader, leading his caravans back and forth from Damascus to China, and soon is put in command of his guards. Her new employer soon comes to find her training invaluable, and he entrusts her with a very special mission to find out why his access to raw gemstones has trickled to a stop. Soon, Diredra finds herself at sea again, and finds old friends in the process of completing her mission to the Gem Islands. She finds old enemies too, as the White Lotus Temple's sphere of influence is quietly growing. Upon returning to the City of Steel, she finds that some of her friends have been captured by an evil Sheik, a man who enjoys pain and torture. How can she free them? And will she find out at last, just who was responsible for the downfall of her father Marius?
