The Roman system of calculating monetary values Iates from a period considerably anterior to that of the issue of the earliest Roman coins. Not until some years after the break up Of the Latin League, when Rome was well on the high road towards gaining the supremacy Over Italy, did she adopt a regular bronze coinage (aes grave) which was destined to form the basis of her monetary system 'while the Republic lasted, and with certain modifications and additions continued throughout imperial times.
