Publisher's Synopsis

The really significant road transport developments in Britain occurred before Telford and Macadam, and the most important contribution by motor vehicles was made, not during the first half of the 20th century, but from 1950. Historians' concern with railways, which mechanized only medium- and long-distance traffic, has distracted attention from the continued and increasing importance of short-distance travel by road. More historians have widened their horizons beyond railways and canals since the 1950s, and this book summarizes their work. It also considers the social aspects of the subject. Dorian Gerhold is the author of "Road Transport Before the Railways: Russell's London Flying Waggons".
