Publisher's Synopsis
This study presents an overview of medical and psychological research on the near-death experience (NDE) designed for the general reader. The book sumarizes the available research on the subject and then points out both the strengths and the problems with the evidence. It studies for instance some of the terrifying nightmarish NDEs that some people experience during clinical death and it is known that several drugs in psychopharmacology can produce psychedelic "trips" closesly resembling classic NDEs.;The book shows how the NDE does provide support for the idea that NDE experiences are temporary journeys through death and also shows how evidence to the contrary is partially consistent with this view.
