The Essays on Carlyle and Emerson find a place in this volume for two reasons. First, because the writings of these distinguished Thinkers are the best embodiments of certain aspects of the World and Man which I wish to enforce. Secondly, be cause among the many able and discriminating criticisms of these writers that have yet appeared, in none, as far as I am aware, has any attempt been made to show the harmony and connection of their thoughts as a whole. The' hope that after some years of careful study I might be able to meet this want is my only apology for entering on ground not strictly within the scope of this volume.
