Publisher's Synopsis
This book deals primarily with the important religious issue of evidence for eternal survival of human souls given before or at birth to all humans by God. The principal characters are the male human (here not called FAUST but rather W for Wimpleton) interacting with the devil (here called M for Mephistofeles). The story begins with two beautiful young women ( Anita and Therese) who accompany W on exploratory trips through some of the most attractive countries in contemporary time through Southern Europe and then desert W for marriages to their long-term lovers. W finds a new love and happiness with Marianne in Berlin but after return from their extended honeymoon toward Chicago, she is killed accidentally by a sniper's bullet in Washington. The distraught widower W is now ready to accept the invitation from M to become Director of Research at M's hell and look for signs of living souls among deceased humans while their merits or sins are judged by dead humans including especially saints, good kings and heroes who have brought only joy and happiness to their contemporaries. Unfortunately, W is rejected for eternal life and happiness and is then sent back to the University of Chicago from where he had been forced to retire prematurely. He forgets his past interactions with M in time and dies a contented human at a ripe old age while remembering only his happy times as he passes away at eighty. Wimpleton's final management of hell had destroyed many hell key functions and required extensive rebuilding of facilities which M accepted reluctantly.
