The Historical Introduction, with which it was intended to furnish this volume, has had to be put aside, owing to the unforeseen length to which the transcript of the Register, with its notes, has grown. The material, which has been accumu lated for that purpose, may possibly see the light at some future time in a different form. A brief survey of the parish and church of Leyland, with a list of the Vicars (so far as they are at present known), must on the present occasion suffice.
