Early on the morning of the 27th of December, 1860, the smok ing ruins of Fort Moultrie, and the evident activity pervading Fort Sumter, gave evidence of the fact that Fort Moultrie had been deserted by the United States garrison, and that they had taken possession of Fort Sumter, as the key of the harbor of Charleston. The prompt orders instantly issued by Governor Pickens, that the South Carolina troops should take possession of Castle Pinckney and Fort Moultrie on the same day - the immediate capture of these forts in obedience to said orders - the hauling down of the stars and stripes for the first time in the history of our country the running up in their stead of the Palmetto banner - and the State of South Carolina thus defying the power of the United States - was the actual commencement of this great revolution.
