While temperament is admitted to be largely hereditary - pos sibly because we know so little about it - yet it may be much more a product of training, and especially of very early impressions, than we are wont to believe. While evidence on this point is almost entirely lacking in the case of the prophets, yet we must not neglect any of it that lies at hand, if it Will help to expiain peculiarities of individuals. City-breeding gives a certain bent to one's concep tions; pastoral life, another, and agricultural pursuits, yet another. Acquaintance with the best science of an age gives a type of thinking very difierent from that found among those who think naively.
