We are focusing on the wrong things in education! School Choice, Charters, Magnet Schools, Vouchers, Private Schools, Cyber Schools...they won't work! Programs are not the answer; people are! Our country makes excuses as the adults in charge, and we hear ourselves take this hands-off stance when we openly blame -these children.- These are OUR children - birthed, raised and reared in this country under an educational system initially designed to -inferiorize- them. Now we want -them- back on track, but the adults - the politicians, the parents, the educators and all the stakeholders - are the blame because we still refuse to take responsibility in our own homes and in our places of work to do what's right for Black kids and minorities. We'd rather implement a hands-off program instead of looking into our own hearts and our own beliefs and tell the truth about our own work ethic! After all, the minority kids are not the majority kids, and honestly, who really cares because -they're stupid anyway.- Right? Our country historically created an inferior education for Black kids and attempts to use superficial -programs- to fix it. Meanwhile, segregation statistics point to the fact that Whites increasingly do not stay in Black neighborhoods; they only come to Black neighborhoods to teach Black kids because Whites make up more than 80% of the teaching force in the United States, while beyond 2017, Blacks and other minorities make up the majority of students in public schools. The intersection of race is inevitable in the schoolhouse no matter how far one moves. The problem will be fixed when African Americans and Whites have a true mutual agreement to work together, at home and at school, for the betterment of OUR children. That goes for Black parents, White teachers, the remaining 20% of teachers, all the politicians that call for reformation programs and society in general. Fix our heart, our values and our collective work ethic - Problem Solved! In this short book, an experienced school district leader fesses up and discusses the truth about educating Black children.
