Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Problem of Evil
To some, and perhaps to many who may chance to pick up this volume, the subject may seem uninteresting and repuls1ve, and the manner of treating it dry and unreadable; but if they re?ect a mo ment, they may perhaps see that very much of the good which per tains to the present life, and all that gathers into the thoughts and hopes of the next, have their root and their reason in some solution or disposal of this ever-present problem.
Hence, in this way the need, if not the desire Of understanding the subject the need, if not the determination to do all that can be done to fathom it fully, can be readily seen; if in fact (by all thinking men) such work is not at once coveted, embraced and prized as all-important.
Let this, then, be the apology for the appearance of this volume, and also for the plain and earnest manner in which it is written.
