Publisher's Synopsis
The Power of Connection tells the story of Max, Isla, Evan, and Zoey, four teenagers who find out that they have special abilities. On the run from enemies who want to steal their powers, the friends learn of a secret society - of people just like them - who have been operating, since the dawn of time, to help protect the rest of us.
Fast-paced, full of twists and turns, the story speaks to the value of friendship and the power of small acts of goodness to change the world. Max and his friends face many dangers: forest fires spread by unwieldy dragons, vicious storms summoned by characters who give in to despair, a ruthless overseer, and a dark foe who can control minds by casting terrifying illusions. Aimed at adolescents aged 12-14 but broad in its appeal, the adventure of Max and his friends suggests that it is our connections to one another - and not just our special abilities - that can save us. FROM THE BACK COVER For many ages, unbeknownst to ordinary humans, members of The Family have been looking out for us. Each member has one of five powers. Some can travel great distances with their minds. Some can make themselves - and others - invisible. Some can control the wind and the waves to bring a sweet summer rain or a terrifying storm. Some are dragon riders. And the rare individual can read the minds of others with power. From the shadows, the members of The Family keep an eye on us, protecting us when they can, saving us from the worst possible fate. But from their ranks an ambitious leader rises, who seeks to capture all power for himself. It is up to Max and his teenage friends, Zoey, Isla, and Evan, to stop him. But first they must discover the truth about who they are and why they've been hidden away from the world their entire lives. FROM CHAPTER FIVE As soon as they had passed through the glass door, the four shared a shocked look. What they saw was a far cry from the wasteland they had been told about. The air they breathed was not the poisonous fumes of the stories. Metres from the facility perimeter was a lush green forest. Above them, a broad sky was just beginning to darken as the sun slipped downward in the west. The world looked exactly as it had in the videos of the time before, the time before life on earth had apparently perished. The friends paused, just for a moment, speechless in the realization that their understanding of the world was a lie. Then the four teenagers ran like they had wings on their feet.
