Precis. - Count N erfo, a rich old nobleman, during a quarrel strikes his young wife, Beatricez - lutwi ated, she presently leaves the palace - never to re turn! - with a terrible purpose in her heart, fully revealed in succeeding scenes. In scene four the passionate girl, now grown irresolute, encounters Donatello, the lover jilted for Count Nerfo, while returning from Pieta'e house - where, by the by, another character, Cariola, also appears - armed with the deadly potion. She revealing her unhappiness and the projected crime, the thoughtless and impetu ous soldier - ?rst securing the phial - persuades Bea trice to accompany him to a place of refuge, which turns out to be in old Pieta's grounds. - There the act leaves them.
